We're excited to hear about your recent decision to follow Jesus. As fellow followers of Christ, we want to help you get started on this spiritual journey. One of the first things we'd suggest is to get a copy of the Bible. This holy book will be an essential guide in your walk with Jesus.
Today, there are many convenient ways to access the Bible. If you prefer to read on your phone, tablet, or computer, we'd recommend downloading the YouVersion Bible App, which provides free access to many versions of the Bible, including the New Living Translation (NLT) which we've found to be an accessible and accurate modern English translation. You can download the app on the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store.
The Bible is divided into two major sections, the Old Testament and the New Testament.
1. Old Testament: This consists of 39 books, starting with Genesis and ending with Malachi. It details God's creation of the world, the history of God's chosen people (the Israelites), God's laws, and prophecies about the coming of Jesus.
2. New Testament: This contains 27 books, starting with Matthew and ending with Revelation. It focuses on the life, teachings, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the formation and growth of the early Church, and letters (epistles) from early Church leaders offering guidance and encouragement to early Christian communities.
As for reading the Bible, here are some suggestions:
1. Begin with the Gospels: The four Gospels—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John—in the New Testament give an account of Jesus' life and teachings. John particularly is often recommended for those new to the faith, due to its focus on the love of Jesus.
2. Try a Reading Plan: Consider using a reading plan, which you can find in the YouVersion app or other Christian resources. Plans often provide structure and can guide you through key themes or books.
3. Use a Study Bible: A study Bible has notes and explanations that can help clarify and provide context to what you're reading.
4. Read Daily: As the Bible, Book of Psalm 1:2 (NLT) encourages, find delight in the Lord’s law and meditate on it day and night.
Lastly, don't be afraid to ask questions and seek guidance from a trusted mentor, pastor, or church community. We're all here to help one another grow in faith.
May this journey with the Bible deepen your understanding of God's love and His purpose for your life.
With blessings and joy 🙏 🎉
